The book Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life placed on a soft neutral fabric, surrounded by flowers and shells, reflecting mindfulness, stillness, and intentional living.

Discovering the Art of Purposeful Living with Ikigai

Like many, I often find myself caught in the whirlwind of daily tasks like ticking off to-do lists, meeting deadlines and staying busy. Despite the constant activity, there was always a sense that something was missing. It wasn’t a lack of productivity but the feeling of moving through life on autopilot; checking boxes without genuine fulfilment. This quiet disconnect made me question how often we move through our days without mindfulness or a sense of intentional living.

Recently, I was inspired to revisit Ikigai, the Japanese philosophy of purpose, after coming across a reel on Instagram. This book had initially sparked my interest in non-fiction, but this time, its message struck a deeper chord.

If you’ve ever worked out, you might be familiar with the concept of the ‘mind-muscle connection’ – the practice of being fully present in each movement. It dawned on me that this principle could extend far beyond the gym. By bringing mindfulness into daily activities, whether working, cooking, or conversing, even the most routine moments could transform into intentional experiences.

What is Ikigai?

In Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life, Héctor García and Francesc Miralles explore the meaning of ikigai, often described as one’s “reason for being.” Deeply rooted in Okinawan culture, where people are known for their exceptional longevity, ikigai is viewed as essential to health, happiness, and a purpose-driven life.

This Japanese philosophy reminds us that we don’t need to abandon routines or chase grand achievements to find fulfilment. Instead, ikigai teaches intentional living by aligning our lives with activities that reflect our inner values.

Ikigai is built on four foundational elements:

  • What you love (passion)
  • What you’re good at (profession)
  • What the world needs (mission)
  • What you can be rewarded for (vocation)

When these intersect, they form ikigai, a unique purpose that nurtures contentment for both the individual and the community, strengthening the connection between meaning and long-term well-being.

Introducing Niksen: The Art of Doing Nothing

While ikigai encourages purposeful action, its counterpart in Dutch philosophy, Niksen, invites us to slow down and embrace the art of doing nothing. In a world obsessed with productivity, Niksen highlights the importance of stillness, allowing the mind to wander freely without pressure or judgment.

At first glance, ikigai and Niksen may seem contradictory. Yet together, they create balance. Ikigai provides purpose, while Niksen creates space to pause, reflect and reconnect with that purpose. By practising both, we move away from autopilot and toward a rhythm of mindful living supported by restorative pauses.

A Holistic Approach: Mind, Body & Soul

1. The Mind

Our minds play a vital role in discovering and nurturing our ikigai. By intentionally reducing distractions and embracing moments of Niksen, we create space for clarity, reflection, and mental well-being.

2. The Body

In Okinawa, living with purpose naturally supports physical health. Engaging in meaningful activities encourages movement, healthy habits, and relaxation. Similarly, Niksen acts as a counterbalance to stress, reminding the body that rest is as essential.

3. The Soul

Connecting with ikigai grounds us in meaning, while stillness restores emotional harmony. Practising gratitude, a core aspect of ikigai, helps shift us away from self-doubt and toward acceptance. Niksen complements this by offering mental freedom – to reflect, recalibrate, and realign with what truly matters.

My Personal Experiences: Practising Ikigai and Niksen

1. Joy in Everyday Tasks

By focusing on what I love, even ordinary activities like cooking, writing, and organising have become sources of joy. Practising Niksen alongside ikigai has helped me appreciate the quiet moments in between, reinforcing mindfulness in daily life.

2. A Renewed Perspective on Growth

Ikigai taught me that purpose evolves over time. When paired with Niksen, I learned that stillness is not stagnation; it’s a space for growth, curiosity and self-compassion.

3. A Meaningful Approach to Life

Rather than escaping challenges, ikigai encourages me to face them with clarity and intention. Niksen serves as a mental reset, offering calm and perspective when life feels overwhelming.

How You Can Embrace Ikigai and Niksen

1. Pause and Observe

Cultivating mindfulness begins with awareness. Ask yourself why you’re engaging in a task: is it a habit, obligation or genuine intention?

2. Infuse Intention

Align everyday actions with what matters most to you. Whether personal or professional, bring presence, purpose, and intention into each moment.

3. Embrace Stillness

Make room for Niksen. Even a few minutes of doing nothing can spark clarity, creativity, and emotional resilience.

Conclusion

As the book beautifully reminds us, “The secret to a long and happy life lies in living with intention and joy.” By blending the purposeful path of ikigai with the restorative stillness of Niksen, we create a life that feels grounded, meaningful and whole. Perhaps fulfilment isn’t about doing more or less, but about doing everything with mindful presence, gratitude and genuine joy.
